Namibia part 1
Orange River – the border

After three days on the road from Cape Town to the North of South Africa, we finally enter Namibia. The superb colors of the Orange river, to the darkness of the dunes, cross the desert and delimit the two countries. The landscape are amazing and a superb introduction to the rest of the country!

Fish River Canyon

After five hours on the road driving very slowly, we arrive finally at the Fish River Canyon, where we go for a small walk on the top of the canyon. It is less impressive than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but the vegetation, the colors of the desert around, and the impressive moon in the background, make this place unique and the moment magic.

Our walk in the desert

Our preferred moment this week is for sure our walk in the sand desert of Namibia.

It is with France, our guide, that we learn how to survive in the desert, how the dunes form with time and the seasons, what are the various insects, fruits, plants in the desert… France was born between the sand dunes, and grew up with his parents who taught him how to escape the lions, survive without water, and eat certain plants to keep alive. He knows all the dunes by heart and can recognize the foot tracks of his parents, wife and children in the sand. France is very funny and very entertaiing. We love the song of his clicks!

After 2h30 of walk under a blazing sun we finally climb up the famous and impressive dune 45, where we can appreciate the silence of the desert and the absolute beauty of the landscape with its colors changing with the sunset.

The vastness of the landscape, the calmness of the plains, the freedom of the animals, the deep silence around us give us magical feelings.
Swakopmund

We remain in this coastal and touristic town to reload our batteries. It feels good to stay off the road and sleep on a real mattress. During our stay, Laurent will also experience the craziness of skydiving.

Walking in the streets of Swakop, we meet this small group of children also walking quietly, chatting on their way to their village, Modessa, 5km further away. We decide to interview them. See below!
